Why Sealing Matters Here
Sealcoating is a thin protective coat spread over asphalt. It does not add strength, but it slows the two things that age pavement fastest in Bossier City: strong sun that dries out the asphalt binder, and water that gets into the surface and works down to the base. A sealed driveway also resists oil and gas stains and looks dark and even again.
When to seal
New asphalt needs time to cure first. HomeGuide recommends waiting 3 to 6 months after paving and resealing every 2 to 10 years depending on the product and conditions. Sealer needs dry weather between about 50 and 95 degrees. Here, that rules out the hottest afternoons of July and August and the wettest spells of spring, so most sealing is scheduled for spring and fall, or for summer mornings.
Preparation is most of the work
- Blow off and sweep the surface, edges and joints
- Scrape and treat oil spots so the sealer bonds
- Fill cracks first; sealer alone does not close them
- Edge by hand along the garage, walks and curbs
- Apply by squeegee or spray, usually two coats on driveways
Which sealer
HomeGuide notes that coal tar sealer has been banned in many areas over health and environmental concerns, and that asphalt emulsion is considered more environmentally friendly. We tell you what product we plan to use and why.
Staying off it
Plan to keep cars off a freshly sealed surface for 12 to 72 hours, depending on temperature and humidity. Foot traffic is usually fine within a few hours. We barricade the driveway or the sections of a lot being sealed.
Lots and striping
On a commercial lot, sealcoating covers the old lines, so restriping follows. Doing both together is the usual way to make an older lot look new again, and it is a good moment to check that accessible spaces are laid out correctly.
What sealcoating cannot do
Sealer is a few hundredths of an inch thick. It does not level low spots, fill potholes or strengthen a weak base, and it will not hide alligator cracking for long. If a driveway has those problems, sealing is money spent on the wrong layer. We look for those signs first and tell you if repairs need to come before sealing.
Sealing in this climate
The Shreveport-Bossier area averages more than 90 days a year above 90 degrees, and the summer sun dries out the asphalt binder that holds the stone together. That is what turns a black driveway gray and lets loose stone ravel out of the surface. Regular sealing replaces that protective top layer.
What This Covers
A seal coat job includes cleaning, crack work and the sealer itself.
Cleaning
Debris, dirt and vegetation removed from surface and edges.
Oil spot treatment
Stains primed so sealer bonds instead of peeling.
Crack filling
Open cracks filled before the seal coat goes on.
Sealer application
Two coats on most driveways, edged by hand.

Sealcoating Questions
How often should I seal my driveway?
HomeGuide gives a range of every 2 to 10 years, depending on the sealer and conditions. Strong sun and heavy rain push toward the shorter end. If the surface has turned gray and the stone is showing, it is due.
Can you seal a brand-new driveway?
Not right away. New asphalt needs 3 to 6 months to cure before sealing, according to HomeGuide.
Will sealcoating fix cracks?
No. Sealer is thin and will not bridge cracks. We fill cracks first, then seal.
What if it rains after sealing?
Sealer needs dry hours to set. We check the forecast and reschedule rather than seal ahead of rain.
How much does sealing cost for a typical driveway?
HomeGuide puts driveway sealing at about $1 to $2 per square foot, or about $400 to $800 for a 400-square-foot two-car driveway. Crack filling and oil-spot treatment can add to that.
